Basics of Functional Safety and SIL Training Course- a successful event
Mumbai, Sep 26- Today the training program, Basics of Functional Safety and SIL was held at Hotel Kohinoor Continental, Andheri, Mumbai which was a great success! Attended by several senior professionals from diverse sectors such as Engineering Consultants, End User industries, Instrumentation manufacturers and independent safety professionals, this training program was a universal success, with all participants being happy about their experience.
The training was organized by Abhisam Software’s India team and the trainer was none other than the world’s leading expert on Functional Safety and SIL, Dr. Michel Houtermans, Managing Partner of Risknowlogy GmbH. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Houtermans said ” I am glad that people in India are so interested in Functional Safety and SIL. India is a growing economy and as plants, equipment and even facilities such as buildings, become more and more automated, functional safety will be very important in the coming years”.
Says one of the training program participants “Dr. Houtermans is very knowledgeable about the subject and I was very happy to get all my queries answered. There is a lot of information gap regarding the concept of SIL, how to certify instruments and products to SIL and the IEC standards and Dr. Houtermans provided clear answers to all my questions.”
Says Mandar Phadke, CEO, Abhisam Software about the program “We had a lot of requests from various people to do such a program. This is a very good beginning for those either new to Functional Safety or to those who are interested in getting an overall view of the subject such as local Instrumentation vendors, who want to get their local products certified as being SIL compliant.”
The program aimed at answering the following questions.
- What is Functional Safety?
- What is Safety Integrity Level? How does it affect me, my job, my products and my company?
- Why do my customers ask for SIL certification?
- Do the standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 apply to me? (to my products or industry)
- Customers want SIL compliance, why? How do we achieve it for them?
- What is a SIL study? What is a SIL assessment?
- What do we mean by terms like SIL verification and SIL validation?
- How do I get my products SIL certified?
At the end of the program, Mandar Phadke and Dr. Houtermans, distributed certificates to the participants. For more information about this program please contact us.
Mobile learning-does it really change the e-learning landscape
As the title of this post says, does the advent of the mobile phone really impact the e-learning environment? Are users of mobile phones looking for learning content delivered on their mobile phones? Does m-learning have a future? Here is an interesting video of the highlights of the debate that took place at the 2010 Learning Technologies conference.
Skill shortages in the Oil & Gas industry
There has been talk of skills shortages at various levels and disciplines in the worldwide Oil & Gas industry. This is true, ask any of the Oil & Gas industry veterans and they will bemoan the same thing. Many Oil & Gas training programs are mostly classroom based even today, which should really be changing now, with the advent of e-learning and m-learning. One example is Abhisam Software’s e-learning courses for the Oil & Gas sector on various topics such as Safety Instrumented Systems, Hazardous Area Instrumentation and Gas Monitors.
Partly, the present skill shortage is because many youngsters today, no longer find a career in Oil & Gas as appealing, as was say, a decade or two ago. Now, it is just one of many options. Despite this, the bean counters at many of these places did not see it coming and went ahead with the “downsizing” schemes that sharply reduced the available pool of talent. Now that the sector is picking up again, it finds serious skills shortages. Instead of blaming anybody, what the industry insiders can do is to consider upgrading their workforce skills by using modern technology, namely e-learning, m-learning and other ways to quickly bring upgrade skill levels of the existing workforce.
The video below says a lot.
An easy way to upgrade the skills of your existing workforce is to use ready to deliver training courses for oil & gas industry by clicking here.
E-learning’s time finally arrives!
If you have noticed the headlines in the press recently, they are
- Gas prices go through the roof !
- Driving anywhere is now unaffordable !
- Economic recession stares us in the face !
- Skills shortage in engineering fields !
- Immigration reform- Should we agree to a “guest worker” program?
- Budgets slashed as companies get into cost-cutting mode
- Gamers grow in numbers
So what’s new that am I saying here?
All this is well known.
Well, all this together, means just one thing—-that the good old days of e-learning are back!
Remember a few years ago, when e-learning was touted to be the next big thing, but none of us really saw it take off and reach its full potential. That’s because the right time for e-learning to take off was not then , but now.
It is a fact that in an economic downturn, companies will slash jobs as well as other costs to stay afloat. But it is also a fact that if a worker or any professional gets up to date on newer skills that are in demand in the market, the jobs are almost assured. In fact downturn or no downturn, there is currently a large shortage of skills in many professions today. The only way to build up these skills quickly is by training large numbers of workers and professionals in newer technologies by using not age-old methods of seminars, classrooms and blackboard based teaching but by…. you guessed it right, by e-learning!
E-learning is the perfect solution to all the woes expressed in the headlines given above. How?
Read on below….
- High Gas prices means that commuting to classes is not very smart-get into an e-learning course instead! (University students have started doing this)
- Economic recession-get trained in newer skills fast, so that you can protect yourself from a downturn. Again e-learning is the fastest, most practical solution.
- Skills shortage in engineering today-less kids enroll today in engineering courses, leading to a shortage of fresh engineers. Amongst those who are still available, the set of skills they have is obsolete ; how to get them up to the benchmarks fast? Simple, by e-learning of course!
- Instead of guest workers, wouldn’t it make sense to re-train existing workers, who may be getting laid off? Which is the fastest, least costliest option to do this? E-learning of course!
- E-learning costs have continued to come down over the years, due to lower costs of hardware and better technology. Which means that penny pinching companies will find it a great solution for training their employees without breaking the bank.
- A larger number of people in the workforce today are kinda more comfortable today with computers, gaming and hi-tech gadgets. So there is no tecno-resistance as compared to the earlier generation of workers. In fact at many companies a decade ago, I know that many e-learning initiatives could not really get off the ground due to the low computer penetration and suspicion about computers in general (among the workforce of that day). This is simply not true today. Hence there is no “user-resistance” to e-learning today. Which is why it will succeed today even more.
Now is a great time to be in the field of e-learning.
We are happy to be in these exciting times in this area.
Check out some of our e-learning courses today like Hazardous Area Instrumentation, RFID , Gas Monitors and now Safety Instrumented Systems too.
